How to Pick a Digital Camera

Purchasing a digital camera is a process that should be well thought out. You want a camera that is conducive to your needs while still producing high quality images. After all, this is the piece of equipment you are entrusting your most precious and joyous memories to. There are many factors to consider when picking a digital camera.

  • Look for a camera with the highest resolution you can afford. It's best to choose a camera with at least three megapixels.

  • Ensure the camera has a completely glass lens instead of a plastic lens.

  • Check the RAM capacity of the camera. Generally, the larger the RAM capacity the more expensive the camera is. However, the more RAM available, the more pictures you can store on your camera without the need for a memory card. Cameras with a larger RAM capacity don’t require the need for you to frequently download and erase your pictures.

  • Examine the zoom features available on the camera. Compare the optical, digital and zoom abilities of each camera, as you will use this feature most often.

  • Verify the camera has a flash mode, this is essential to taking high quality pictures in various light settings.

  • Find out if the camera has a viewfinder; this helpful accessory comes in either an optical or LCD format.

  • Be sure that the camera has a slot for a memory card. Though you want to select a camera with a large memory capacity, the option to use a memory card is extremely helpful when taking pictures away from your computer for extended period of time.

  • Research the battery type and life. Ensure that the battery type can easily be replaced and has an adequate charge lifespan.

  • Compare other optional features such as interchangeable lens, auto-exposure, battery life indicator, AC adapter, video-out connection option, automatic white balance, self-timer and manual focus.
