How to Pick a Local Antique Shop

Antique stores are a great place to find hidden treasures. If you are looking for antique furniture, antique rugs or even antique dolls, there are many antique stores that you can shop at. Some antique stores specialize in carrying specific items, such as books or artwork, and there are others that sell anything that you could possibly want.

1. Decide what type of antiques you want to purchase. The goods that antique shops carry can vary across the country. Research what your local antique shops offer and determine if it is what you would want to purchase. If you are in the market for southwestern antique goods, states such as Arizona or New Mexico would be great places to look.

2. Contact the local shops in your area. Consult with the owner of the shop and figure out what type of inventory they have in the store. Ask about their prices and the quantity of their selections. With antique shops, merchandise is not normally carried in bulk shipments.

3. Visit as many shops as you can. While one shop might have a piece that you love, you might find other stores lacking in a particular artifact that you are looking for. You can also search online for antique shops. Odds are, if you do not find something that you want in the store, then you can find it with an online retailer.

4. Compare each store that you visit. Once you have made the appropriate rounds, analyze the overall aspects of each store. Study the prices and the quality of the items.

5. Examine the condition of the items. Not all antique stores carry good quality merchandise and will sometimes try and scam the customer into paying more than they should for an item. Look for a detailed description of an item and consult with an antiques appraiser to determine the value of it.
