Choosing a doctor who specializes in orthodontics can be a time consuming process.  Dentists do not handle dental issues that require braces or other alignment issues.  For these types problems, you will need to find an orthodontist.  Picking the right orthodontist requires some research and testimonials.

1.  Talk with your dentist about orthodontists in your area.  Ask him or her for a recommendation.  Dentists have access to information about other professionals in their field.  Your dentist can help you pick an orthodontist.

If you are choosing for your child, talk with other parents. You want to be sure the orthodontist works well with children.

3.  Visit the orthodontist’s office before agreeing to any dental work.  You want to make sure that you feel comfortable with the orthodontist as a person and a professional. You will also want to view the facilities before making a commitment to ensure cleanliness.

4.  Talk with the orthodontist personally.  You can get most of your information from the staff, but you want to make sure that you have had a chance to meet the orthodontist that will be working on your teeth.

5.  Understand that working with an orthodontist is usually a two-year commitment.  Take your time and find the right orthodontist because you will be working with the same doctor for a long period of time.
