How to Plan Additional Kitchen Storage

Kitchen storage space is a major necessity in any home, especially if you are always cooking and entertaining. Some kitchens are designed to have more than enough storage space, while others require a bit of creativity to get the space you need. Planning additional space allows your kitchen to become more organized and functional.

  1. Take an inventory of all items in your kitchen. This includes cookbooks, pots and pans, cleaning supplies, utensils, food and containers. Put all of these items together, according to their category and line them up to assess the amount of space you will need. By taking measurements, you are preparing yourself for a sufficient amount of storage containers and shelves.

  2. Assess the amount of available space you have in your kitchen. Take into consideration the space above your cabinets, the space on walls that are not being used and any extra space around the cabinets and eating area.

  3. Measure the amount of space you have and write down each figure to determine the amount of wood and other supplies you will need to purchase. This can also help you determine if there are ready-made storage cabinets that blend well with your kitchen theme.

  4. Install the shelves and any additional cabinetry on the open wall space and make sure they are sturdy enough to hold the goods you are storing on them.

  5. Place inserts into your existing cabinetry to maximize the storage space you already have. These cabinets are then converted into multi-shelf storage units. You can also choose to install shelves in the cabinets yourself, so you have complete control over the creative design process.
