How to Plant Bulbs in Containers
Many people are unaware that you can actually plant bulb flowers in containers. They are just as easy to grow in the pot as they are in the ground. Flowers like tulips and daffodils look great in containers placed on a deck or patio.
- Choose the type of container you want. If you are adorning a deck or patio with plants, then choose a container that will match the decor. For example, for a deck you can choose a wooden container and for a brick patio, a ceramic container would look nice.
- Purchase high-quality potting soil. Fill up a pot with potting soil until the bulbs are fully covered. This will end up being about 2 inches or more.
- Add fertilizer to the soil. Pour some slow-release bulb fertilizer directly on top of the potting soil.
- Place the bulbs on top of the soil. Position the bulbs as close together as possible so that you will have more flowers when it is time for them to bloom. Set the bulbs on top of the soil in the pot.
- Add more soil to the pot. Add until it reaches at least an inch from the top of the pot.
- Water the pot. Be very generous with the water for daffodils and tulips. Next, cover with mulch and pick a cool spot for the plants. If you are planting in the fall, you can place the potted place inside the house near a window sill.
- Monitor the growth of the plants. Once you notice that they are starting to bloom, move the potted plants to a new location where there is direct sunlight.
- Continue watering the plants. Do this daily until they reach full bloom. Also use plant food every 2 weeks.
