How to Plant Garden Boxes

Garden boxes are nice to create a focal point in the landscape. They are usually permanent fixtures in the location that they are built, but they can also be smaller and more portable. Planting the garden boxes is the same whether it is a fixed location or a portable one.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Level

  • Pitchfork

  • Newspaper

  • Compost

  • Rake

  • Garden Soil

  • Seed, Bulbs, Cuttings

  • Water

  1. Make sure the garden box is in a level location by using the level. Once it is in a level location, take the pitchfork and put some of the garden soil into the box. If it is a portable garden box you may need to fix the casters or wheels so that it stays in the location. Chock it with small pieces of wood or similar to do this.

  2. Add in some newspaper, careful not to put colored print into the garden box. The newspaper will help add nutrients when it decomposes and work as a weed barrier.

  3. Cover the newspaper with the compost.

  4. Rake the garden soil, newspaper and compost mix to a level soil line.

  5. Take whatever seed, bulbs, or cuttings you are wanting to plant into the garden box and put them into the soil mix. Make sure that they are spaced appropriately and are ready to be in the ground. Check them for damage or disease.

  6. Once they are in the soil mix, take a bit more of the garden soil and cover them.

  7. Water lightly so as not to disturb the soil. Keep it moist until the plants begin to germinate.
