How to Plant Potatoes

If you are one that enjoys growing your own vegetables, you may be interested in planting potatoes. It is important to learn when it is the best time to plant your potatoes. You do not want to plant them too early in the season, this could cause the seed pieces to rot. Here is how to plant potatoes to get the best results.

  • The best type of seeds for potatoes are seed pieces. Seed pieces are parts of the whole potatoes. Cut the potato pieces into ½ to 2 ounce pieces. It is important to leave an “eye” in each part of the potato seed piece.

  • Plant each seed pieces about 8 to 10 inches apart. Your soil should be fertile and well drained.

  • Make sure each piece is covered in a furrow about 2 inches deep. Space the rows about 20 inches apart. The 20 inch spacing will shade the soil. This will usually help prevent high soil temperatures from stopping the potatoes growth.

  • Water the seed pieces on a regular basis. Make sure the area is moist without over-saturating the area. Try to water the plants around the same time each day.

  • The potato plants should grow rather quickly. You should see growth within 2-4 weeks. Growth may also depend upon the type of weather and location of the garden.
