How to Port an Existing Fax Number
Many businesses are moving their office functions online. Microsoft's latest suite is available in an Internet version. Long distance calling has been available online for years. Although web faxing has been around for a while, Internet fax companies are making it easier than ever to port an existing fax number online.
- Contact the provider for your fax number to find out if it is portable. Not all fax numbers used by businesses are portable.
- Begin looking for an online fax service if your provider states your fax number complies with porting. Some popular services include Fax87 or MetroFax.
- Review the FAQ pages and terms of service for each online fax service. There are plenty of services that allow you to create an account for free. If the service you are considering charges a fee to sign up, you may want to keep looking.
- Sign up for the service once you find a service that allows porting, works with your fax number and does not charge you to create an account.
- Follow the service's instructions to enter the information for your current fax number to begin the porting process.
- Make sure you are aware of all fees. Most Internet fax services do charge at least a one-time fee for porting a fax number. Some services may charge additional fees on a per fax basis.
- Maintain your current fax machine or fax receipt method until the porting process is completed. Depending on the fax service you choose, the process can take one week to two months.
