How to Practice Bikram Yoga at Home

Bikram yoga is a type of yoga practiced in a heated room, also known as hot yoga. While maintaining the correct temperature and humidity is challenging, it is not so difficult that participants cannot use it at home. Primarily, a method for heating the room and a method for maintaining humidity are needed.

Like many forms of hot yoga, Bikram requires a room with a temperature of 105 degree Fahrenheit. Additionally, the ideal humidity level is approximately 40 percent. To accomplish the necessary environment, participants have several choices, although using a space heater and a humidifier are the easiest.

  1. Use the warmest or easiest to heat
room in the home. This differs based on location, time of
year, windows and the type of home.

  2. Measure the ambient temperature of
the room, using an indoor thermometer. If the home has central heat,
turn the thermostat up high enough to bring the temperature up.
If needed, a small space heater placed in the room can further boost
the temperature to the required 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. Monitor the humidity level in the
room as the temperature rises. If the level of moisture in the air
falls below 40 percent, turn on the humidifier.

  4. Continue to monitor room
temperature and humidity until the desired heat and humidity levels
are reached. Adjust thermostats and space heater, as needed to
    maintain proper temperature.

If others are present in the home and the prospect of turning on a whole-house heating system is impractical, consider adding space heaters to raise the temperature in only one room.
