How to Prepare Your Home for Forest Fires
Thousands of people lose their property and homes every year due to forest fires. If your home is located near a forest or brush land it is highly recommended that you prepare your home for the possibility of it being struck by a forest fire. There are several things you can do that just might save your home.
How to Prepare Your Home for Forest Fires
- Remove all the trees that are within 125 feet of your home. This will not 100% guarantee that the fire will not get to your home, but it will definitely decrease the chances of that happening.
- Remove all flammable debris around your house such as pine needles, leaves and fallen branches.
- If you roof is composed of wood shakes they should be replaced with a roofing material that is less flammable.
- Stack firewood as far away from the house as possible.
- Keep your lawn mowed as low as possible.
- Keep roof and gutters free of debris and leaves.
- Remove any tree branches overhanging the roof of the house.
- Place fire curtains, heavy drapery or shutters on all the window of the house.
- Install screens on the foundation and the vents of eaves.
- Clear away any vegetation that is around the fire hydrant and propane tank.
- Ensure that an outside water supply is available.
