How to Prepare for Boarding School

If you are going to boarding school, you should prepare yourself by packing items a few weeks before you leave.  Also, get contact information for the people you wish to stay in touch with, and speak with your roommate before you live with them. Take an extended tour of your school as well, so you are familiar with all areas.

  • Pack necessary items a few weeks before you go to boarding school.  Make a list of the things you need and pack them in suitcases.  Bring things like clothing, toiletries, blankets, and items that remind you of home.  Avoid overpacking because you will not have a lot of space in your room at boarding school.

  • Ask for contact information like phone numbers and email addresses of the people you want to stay in contact with.  Do this for friends and family members.  You will want to contact important people when away from home, and asking for this information before you leave makes for easy communication.

  • If you have a roommate at school, contact this person at least a month before you leave.  Contact your school to get contact information for your roommate.  Call or email your roommate, and be friendly and kind.  Ask about their interests and become familiar with their personality.  It is important to get to know your roommate so you will get along while living together.

  • Go on an extensive tour of the boarding school before you leave.  Become familiar with the classrooms, staff, and living areas.  Make sure you know where important areas are.  Ask many questions during your tour.  This best prepares you for boarding because you will be very familiar with the school.
