How to Prepare for College Placement Tests

College placement tests are a big deal, after all these tests determine the courses you can enroll in to begin your academic career. You shouldn't stress out about taking a placement test, but prepare well in advance. Preparing for a college placement test entails gathering the correct materials and dedicating time to your studies.

1. Ask which placement test the college you are applying to uses. There are
different forms of the test and it is helpful to know which version you should
study for. ASSET, COMPASS and Accuplacer are commonly used college placement
exams.

2. Gather the correct materials that will help you prepare for the placement exam.
There are many free resources online that you can use to help you study. You
will need to study reading, writing and math, as these are the three sections
of the placement exam.

3. Study frequently and allow enough time to master the material before the exam
date. Create flashcards or study with a friend who will also be taking the
exam. Certain colleges may offer workshops or courses to help you prepare for
the placement test. Take advantage of these programs if they are available at
your community college.

4. Rest and get a good night's sleep before the exam date. Eat a healthy breakfast
in the morning so you won't get hungry while taking the test.

5. Allow extra time for your commute to the exam center. You don't want to be
flustered from spending time in traffic or rush in at the last minute. Allow
time to sign in and remember to bring your identification and the required
materials.
