How to Prepare for a Riding Lesson

Jumping into the equestrian world is usually first done by taking some horseback riding lessons. These lessons can be somewhat frightening if you have never been on a horse, but they are a great place to learn, as you have a very knowledgeable person nearby and a calm horse. Before you set off for your first riding lesson, however, you should make sure that you are fully prepared.

  1. Communicate with your riding instructor. Make sure that they know how much experience you have around horses and what your comfort level is. They want to keep you safe and have you get as much as you possibly can out of your lesson, so it is in your best interest to tell the truth.

  2. Make sure your shoes are acceptable. Most instructors prefer you have a pair of boots with at least a one inch heel. This is to prevent your foot from accidentally slipping through the stirrup. You may have height requirements on your boots as well, as to how high they should come up on your calf.

  3. Find out if you are going to need to supply your own helmet. Some instructors have helmets on hand, but if you want to ensure a good fit, you might want to invest in your own. Helmets are crucial for all riders, no matter what their experience level is.

  4. Pick out a comfortable riding outfit. Don’t wear your best clothes, as you most likely will get dirty. Long pants that allow you to move with a breathable blouse are most appropriate. Dress in layers if you think you are going to get hot, and bring a coat if the weather looks iffy.

  5. Don’t be nervous. If you are a little afraid the night before, do some research on horseback riding. You may feel more at ease if you understand the different gaits and tack components. Have fun and relax when you are at your lesson; both you and your horse will be much happier this way.
