How to Preserve Antique Dresses
Preserving and protecting antique clothing can prove to be a challenge if you are unsure of the process. It is important to store the clothing correctly in order to avoid any damage to the fabric, seams or trim. While each antique garment is different and may require different care, there are some general guidelines to follow for preserving antique clothing properly.
Supplies:
- Acid-free tissue paper
- Unbleached muslin
- Plastic boxes
- Cedar blocks
- Dark storage place
- Clean your antique garments if necessary. Many older pieces may require the professional care of a dry cleaner. Others may be hand washed with mild soap and lukewarm water. Be careful if you are washing garments containing embellishments or beading. Do not place your garment in the dryer to dry.
- Store your antique garments in a dark, clean area. If left out in the sun, the fabric of these delicate garments can fade. The ideal way to keep them is by placing the garments in a custom textile box, however, this can be very expensive. Instead you can choose plastic boxes.
- Take your antique clothing and carefully wrap it in acid-free tissue paper or unbleached muslin. Pad the garment with layers of muslin or tissue paper to avoid wrinkles.
- Gently place the clothing into its own box, being careful not to disturb the tissue paper or muslin.
- Add cedar chips or blocks. This can prevent any insects from destroying the fabric. Do not leave any blocks touching the actual fabric.
- Label your boxes or take a Polaroid picture of the garment and tape it on the front for easy access and recognition.
