How to Prevent Ear Mites
Ear mites live in the ears of dogs and feed on the wax that is found in the ear canal. These parasites are small, but can cause a lot of damage to the ear if left untreated. They will cause the ear to become irritated and cause the dog to itch. If not treated, it can result in hearing loss in the dog.
- Keep your dog away from other dogs that have ear mites. These parasites are very contagious, and can easily be passed from one dog to another.
- Make sure your dog’s ears are dry after swimming or bathing. You can use a towel, or simply let your dog run outside in the sun. Do not insert a cotton ball into your dog’s ears, especially if he has any sign of infection.
- Make sure your dog’s ears are clean and healthy. Clean them on a regular basis to reduce ear wax, which will deter ear mites. You should clean your dog’s ears at least one time per month, and make sure you check for signs of infection while you are cleaning them. The dog should be taken to the vet immediately if you see any sign of infection.
- Wash your dog’s bedding and disinfect it on a regular basis, especially if he has recently had an ear mite infection. You should also disinfect any areas where your dog spends a lot of time.
- Treat your dog for ear mites if he has been exposed to them. If any other household pet you have gets ear mites, you should treat your dog whether he has them or not, because they are so contagious and he can get them easily.
