Mildew can grow anywhere moisture is found with no air circulation. Removing mildew can be a hard process, depending upon how much you have. Sometimes harmful chemicals have to be used when removing mildew, and it can take some time and money. Preventing mildew will be beneficial to you, and you can do so in a few short steps.
- Place a humidifier in rooms that have no air circulation. Open windows in your home, open doors on the closet, dresser, and basement. You need to increase the air circulating in your home to prevent mildew.
- Insert fabric bags filled with baking soda or cornstarch into drawers and closets to help control the moisture. Leave the lights on when you can to increase heat, which will make the moisture evaporate.
- Keep things clean. Mildew can’t grow in places where it is clean. Allow a place to become dirty; however, and mildew can grow easily. An area of spilled food, for example, is a perfect place for mildew to grow. A simple weekly cleaning can be a huge deterrent to mildew.
- Control the temperature in your house. Mildew loves the temperature to be between 77 and 86 degrees. Using air conditioning reduces the temperature in your home, which prevents mildew growth.
- Use exhaust fans in your home, especially in the bathroom or laundry room. If you find any leaks in your home, fix these immediately before mildew starts to grow.
- Keep fabrics clean and dry. Never put wet clothing in a hamper, as mildew will start to grow very quickly. Do not leave wet towels lying around. Close your shower curtain when you are finished taking a shower to allow it to dry.
