How to Prevent People from Walking into Patio Windows

Preventing someone from walking into a patio window can help prevent an injury. In some cases, patio glass can crack or shatter if a person runs into it hard enough. There are some simple methods to use to remind someone in your home that the patio door is not open.

  1. Inform guests who you are entertaining that your patio window is not always open. If you are having an outdoor event, many guests will often come and go without your knowledge. It is very easy for someone who does not know your home very well to walk right into the glass. Ask your guests to help you watch the patio when people are arriving at different times.

  2. Put a sign next to the door to remind people to check it before going onto your patio. A sign is especially handy when you have guests over. Put a sign on the inside and one on the outside next to the patio glass. Remove the signs after your event is over and store them to use the next time you entertain.

  3. Close or lower the patio window curtain to prevent someone from walking into the glass. You do not have to block out all of the light, just enough to let someone know that the patio window is not currently open. Make sure to close the curtain all the way at night for privacy.

  4. Place stickers on the patio glass so it is easy to tell when it is not open. Pick out some decorative stickers and distribute them around the glass. Put the stickers on the interior, so they will not fade from sunlight or exposure to the weather.

  5. Use a chair to block the patio when the window is not open. Place the chair in front of the patio on the inside of your house. You can even leave the chair in front of the patio as a permanent reminder to check before walking outside.
