How to Price a Child's Antique Desk

Most of the older generation will have a child’s antique desk in their home.  Finding the value of the desk can be tough, however.  There are many things that need to be factored into the chair before determining a price.  These factors include condition of the chair and when it was made.

  1. Find out when the chair was made.  You may not be able to tell the exact year it was made but you should be able to determine at least the era it was made.  Depending on the chair, it may be marked on some part of the desk.  When determining the value of the child’s desk, the older the desk, the more it will be worth.

  2. Examine the desk for anything that may bring the value down such as an antique desk that has newer items that may have been added or changed.  This would be things such as hinges or screws.  Be sure that the wood that is on the desk is the original wood.  You can usually tell this by checking to see if all the wood seems the same.  If not, if could have been sanded or stained.  If the wood is all original, that will increase the value of the antique desk.

  3. Figure out what type of antique desk it is.  There are several types of children’s antique desks such as roil-up, open-lid and standard.  The roll-top desks have more value to them because they are harder to take care of.  But this is just an estimate.  It really depends on the year the desk was made and the condition the desk is in.

  4. Ask an appraiser for advice when determining value.  If you cannot locate one in your area, you can take photos and email them to an appraiser along with any information you have on the desk.  It may be a good idea to email more than one to see if you get different quotes.
