How to Print on Fondant

Nearly any home printer that is compatible with the cartridge provided with printable edible inks is capable of creating a print on fondant. That said, it is typically considered a very good idea to either have a sugar printer, or keep a printer that is solely for use with edibles.

Items Needed:

  • A design you wish to print on to fondant

  • Fondant paper

  • A sugar printer or a printer dedicated to edible printing

  • White card stock

  • Edible inks and their printing cartridges

  1. Insert the edible ink cartridges into your printer.

  2. Run a test print on to plain white card stock to ensure you have a proper load. Throw the printed card stock away as it may stain if left untended.

  3. Adjust the feed level of your printer so that it will accept an extra thick paper feed

  4. Prepare your image for printing by opening it up in your graphic photo editing software and running a color adjustment on the image. If there is a lot of white in the image, you may have trouble seeing it against the fondant.

  5. Save the image and send it to your printer so that it is in queue to print.

  6. Print out your design on to the fondant paper.

  7. Avoid stacking multiple sheets of printed fondant paper. Stacking can prevent drying and cause the inks of the image to run or bleed through.  It is suggested that you print one sheet of fondant paper and allow it to dry before beginning a second.

  8. Avoid storing your fondant images where there is excessive moisture. Do not freeze or store in the refrigerator and avoid placing the cake in a cake box once you have placed your image onto the fondant.
