How to Process Dental Insurance Claims

Dental insurance claims can be very difficult to process, and without the proper care could end up costing you a lot of money. Claims are often denied due to human error overlooked by the person who filed it. By following a few simple steps, many of these errors can be avoided and you can easily get a claim approved.

1. Contact your dental insurance company. Procedures for dental claims can vary depending on the company. Be sure to find out exactly what is expected out of you as the insured.

2. Ask your dental office for assistance. A claim is usually handled at the dentist's office by trained specialists. Some offices may not offer this service.

3. Fill out any required forms. There could be forms needed by the insurance company as well as the dental office. Be sure to ask who needs what.

4. Be thorough. Make sure to double and triple check your paperwork. Claims are often denied due to a simple clerical error.

5. Check mail. Claims are typically approved or denied within 30 days. Keep your eye out for an envelope with your insurance's logo.

6. Follow directions. If your claim is denied there will be a reason as well as instructions on how to submit the claim.

7. Notify the dental office. Be sure to contact the dentist's office if a problem arises with your claim. They will probably be notified by the insurance company as well, but be sure they hear from you.

8. Check on pay back policy. If a claim is not approved in time the dental office may require payment in full. Check with your insurance company about a cash pay back if this happens.

9. Stay calm and respectful. The process can be hard and irritating, but stay as polite as possible. Remember the person you're talking to is only following the rules and doing their job.
