How to Profit From Short-Term Investment
An investor who wants to try and profit from short-term investments will need to monitor trades on a daily basis. The investor will need a reliable charting program to follow the progress of a stock or other investment. Using a low commission broker can help the investor save on trading costs.
- Open a brokerage account to use for short-term investing. Find a broker that has low commissions. Using a broker that does not have a high fee for placing a trade will reduce your costs and add more profit to your bottom line.
- Analyze a stock that you want to try and trade for the short term. Use a charting program to go over the price history of the stock. There are many websites that have the history available for free, or you can purchase charting software if you require more advanced indicators to make your trading decisions.
- Decide when to buy the stock. For example, one way to try and profit from short-term investing is by waiting for a price retracement to occur. You buy the stock after it falls, then sell it once it rises again. This is not as easy as it sounds since there is no guarantee that a stock that has fallen will go back up over the short term.
- Place a trade once you choose your investment strategy. Follow the trade on your charts to decide when to exit the position. If the stock rises, take your short-term profit when the price reaches your target.
- Use a stop order on each trade to define your maximum loss. For example, if you want to risk $2 on a stock, place a stop-loss that is $2 under your entry price. If the stock does not rise to hit your profit target, the stop loss will trigger after it falls $2 from your entry price.
