How to Properly Dispose of Computer Equipment

If you have computer equipment that you need to get rid of it is important to dispose of it properly. Used computer equipment can be hazardous to the environment because computers contain toxins that can seep into the water supply if not disposed of properly. Disposing of computer equipment is easy once you learn how to do it properly.

Before disposing of a computer it is important that the following be done by the user or a professional to ensure that all information has been erased.

Using a Local Recycler

  1. Look online for a computer recycler in your area that accepts used computers in working and non-working condition.

  2. Carefully transport the computer to the recycler location.

  3. The recycler will then test the equipment and find out if it is leaking or damaged beyond repair. If the recycler finds that the computer is beyond repair they will be able to dispose of it properly and send it to be used as scrap. If the used computer is able to be repaired or still usable they will then be able to refurbish it.

  4. Once the computer has been refurbished it will then either be sold or donated by the recycler.

Contact the Manufacturer

  1. Look online for contact information for the manufacture.

  2. Inform the manufacturer that you're interested in disposing of computer equipment that you have.

  3. Ask the manufacturer if they have a local disposing station or if they know of any recycling programs in your area.

  4. Take the computer to the designated location and fill out any paperwork that is needed.
