How to Properly Inflate 17-Inch Tires

If you have a SUV or truck with larger tires, you might wonder how to inflate the tires properly. Proper inflation of tires keeps a vehicle running smoothly, keeps good gas mileage, and helps it to drive at its best performance not only in all weather conditions. It is easy to learn how to properly inflate 17-inch tires.

Things you need:

  • Tire gauge

  1. Buy a tire gauge to help you check the pressure of your car tires. You can purchase a tire gauge from an auto part store or department stores that have auto departments. You don't need anything fancy just a basic gauge.

  2. Locate the recommended tire pressure in your car's manual. You can also check online using the make and model of the vehicle and your tire size. If you need to locate your tire size you can find it on the outer sidewall of your tire.

  3. Remove the valve cap and set it aside in a place you can find it. Press hard on the valve with the tire pressure to get the reading. If you hear air escaping from the tire press harder on the valve to get an accurate reading.

  4. Add air to inflate the 17-inch tire to its recommended pressure. Check the tire pressure frequently with the gauge. If you happen to overfill the tire release some air using a small tool or fingernail to press down on the valve stem.

  5. Replace the valve cap on the tire when you are done inflating the tire. Repeat the above steps for the other three tires. Check the recommended tire pressure carefully because some vehicles have different tire pressures for the front and rear tires.
