How to Properly Measure Your Feet for Footwear

When buying footwear, it's important to get the right size. Although you're used to your shoes being a specific size, the size of your feet can change over time. Even if your actual foot size hasn't changed much, shoe sizes may vary depending on the shoe manufacturer. Properly measuring your feet will ensure their comfort and overall health.

  1. Remove your shoes and put on a light pair of socks or stockings.

  2. Place two sheets of paper on the floor.

  3. Sit down and place one foot on one of the sheets of paper. If you have someone to help measure your feet, stand up instead.

  4. Use a pencil to outline your foot on the paper. Keep as close to your foot as possible.

  5. Trace your opposite foot.

  6. Place a ruler from your heel to your big toe. Subtract 1/5-inch from the measurement.

  7. Measure the widest part of your foot with the ruler next. Subtract 1/5-inch from your measurement.

  8. Take the measurements of the largest foot and compare it to the shoe size chart for where you plan to shop. Use those measurements to determine your correct shoe size.
