How to Protect Yourself From Flu Exposure
The influenza virus, otherwise known as the flu, infects at least 60 million Americans every year. While many people worry about potentially devastating pandemics, like the Swine flu, complications from the common influenza bug kills over 10,000 people per year. As common as the flu is, it's still possible to protect yourself from exposure.
- Get the flu shot. The flu vaccine introduces a weakened form of the flu virus to your immune system and allows your body to form an immunity to the stronger version of the virus.
- Wash your hands. The second most common method of transmitting the flu is by your hands. Keeping them washed will reduce your likelihood of exposure.
- Disinfect surfaces around the workplace and house. The flu virus can lurk on countertops or tables. Using a disinfectant spray can alleviate the risk of infection.
- Keep your hands away from your face. Any surface you touch may be infested with the flu virus, which can be transferred to your mouth, eyes or nose by touch.
- Cover your mouth. If you are in an area with a lot of people and there is a known flu outbreak, a breathing mask may be necessary to help prevent you from breathing in the virus.
- Reduce stress. Stressful situations weaken your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to an influenza infection.
- Eat well. Eating healthy foods keeps your immune system stronger so your body can fight off the flu if it comes into contact with you.
