How to Prune a Bamboo Plant

Bamboo plants are a great starting plant for beginning gardeners, as they don’t require a lot of care. Prune your bamboo plant once in a while to keep it looking great and at a reasonable size, since bamboo plants are known for their continuous growth.

  1. Take off the bamboo plant’s culms that are thinner than the rest, wilted or wrinkled by using a sharp knife. In case you don’t know what culms are, they are the big stems you see at the bottom of the plant. Make sure to cut right at the soil level.

  2. Cut the culms at the top of the plant if there are any that you feel are too tall. Remember to cut above the node if you want to cut the culms off at the top. The node is the larger piece that forms a rigid ring that goes around the culms’ smooth parts. Leaving a portion of culms over the node will cause the culms to die.

  3. Find the culms that look dead and prune them. It is recommended by many bamboo gardeners to cut the branches from the culms’ bottom third and trim branches in the middle third area to create a more beautiful look for your bamboo plant.

  4. Cut and trim the culms’ upper parts in a way that suits you best. To keep your bamboo plant healthy, the only branches you really need to remove are the dead ones.  The rest of the trimming is up to you.
