How to Purchase Online Car Insurance
Since most every home in the US has a computer and Internet access, buying car insurance online has never been easier. With a few clicks of the mouse and about 15 minutes, prospective customers can obtain a quote, pick their deductibles, limits and have their legal proof of insurance in hand. The entire process can be completed from the comfort of your home and you do not have to meet with an agent or mail paperwork.
- Obtain your car's VIN (vehicle identification number) from the plate located underneath the lower right-hand corner of the windshield. Your insurance company will ask for this number along with the make, model, year and color of your vehicle.
- Open your favorite search engine and search for "vehicle insurance" if you do not already have a company name in mind. Major carriers include State Farm, Geico, USAA, Farmers, Progressive and Allstate.
- Locate the area of the website that will give you a free quote. It is a good idea to obtain quotes from several providers so that you can be sure you are getting the best price for the most coverage.
- Complete the questions on the quote form. You will input the VIN, make, model, year and color of your car as well as your name, address, social security number and driver's license number. The quote will also ask you about your driving habits and prior driving violations.
- Compare the quotes that you receive. There can be a variation of hundreds of dollars, so take the time to obtain multiple quotes and compare each one.
- When you find the policy that you wish to purchase, you will be asked for your credit card or bank account information. You may be given the option to set up automatic payment drafts.
- After payment is complete, you will be able to print your proof of insurance immediately. Be sure to put this proof in your car alongside your vehicle registration.
