- Enroll into a bachelor degree in fashion merchandising program at a college and/or university of your choice. If at all possible attend a college and/or university in California or New York, as these are the states in which fashion design is most lucrative.
- Apply for an internship with a fashion designer. Your academic advisor could provide you with information pertaining to fashion designers and/or companies that are offering internships within their organization. Within this internship program you have the opportunity to make major connections with individuals who have had success in this industry. Make it your mission to make the best impression possible preferably with your designs.
- Apply for positions within fashion design field. You will start on the ground floor but the experience gained could result in advancements later on.
- Design a small clothing line. By starting off small you have a chance for growth without a high upfront investment.
- Secure a backer or backers to invest in your clothing line. Utilize the connections you made within your internship program.
- Utilize the Internet to market your small clothing line. Set up a marketing campaign that is within your budget to get the word out about your designs.
- Host a small fashion show for your line. Advertise this show as much as possible.
