How to Qualify for Legal Aid

For those that cannot afford to hire an attorney, they may qualify for legal aid. Legal Services Corporation is the governing body that oversees the program and makes the rules about qualifications. It is nonprofit organization that receives its funds from Congress. The LSC has programs in many parts of the country.

  1. Go to the LSC website and locate an office that is nearby. The website makes it
easy to click on your state and it will populate the offices that
    are available.

  2. Make a call to the LSC location
nearest your home. It may not be close, but as long as it is in your
state, they can help you to find out if you are eligible. They can
send you an application via the United States mail or you can drop
by their office if it is close enough and pick one up in person.
Keep in mind that different states will have their own set of laws
regarding requirements you must meet to qualify for legal aid.

  3. Fill out application form fully.
Listing your income, living situation, assets you own, and what type
of legal assistance you need. Take the application in person or mail
it. It will be examined to see if you qualify and if they wish to
take your case. Make sure you have the necessary documentation to
proceed with your case because you will need to give these to the
attorney. Keep in mind that the attorney fees will be free to you
through the legal aid, but you will still need to pay any court
    filing fees.
