How to Qualify for Low-Income Apartments
Nobody likes to think that they are low income. However, with so many people jobless and more being laid off every day, becoming low income is almost the standard these days. Needing low-income apartments is becoming more common, which leaves fewer of them available. Here is how you can apply for low-income apartments.
- Gather up any information that you have that proves that you are actually in need of low-income housing. This can come in the form of paperwork from your job showing that you've been laid off, proof of unemployment, paperwork stating that you are receiving state assistance and how much, or disability paper work. All of these things are verifiable documents that prove your need for low-income apartments. Take any or all of these documents to your local housing authority office.
- Fill out the application for low-income apartments. Understand that because there is a higher need for these apartments than there are apartments available, you could end up on the waiting list to receive one of these HUD or subsidized government apartments for years. It is not uncommon to see waiting lists as long as eight years in areas that are predominantly below the poverty level.
- Once you have filled out the application, search for low-income apartments in your area that meet all of your needs. Keep in mind that these apartments go very quickly, so as long as all your basic needs in an apartment are being met, add your name to their waiting list.
- Wait until a unit comes available. Know that as soon as the apartment is available you have two weeks to have the money to move in. If you do not move into the low-income unit in that time, it will be passed on to the next person on the list.
