How to Quote a Paint Job on a House

Professional painting can be a side job or a full-time profession. Either way, you will need to know how to quote a paint job if you are going to be reputable. Knowing what to look for when preparing a quote will help ensure that you don't lose money on your next job.

Items you'll need:

  • Measuring tape

  • Calculator

  • Computer

Step 1: Visit the area that you will be painting. It will be vital that you measure the house entirely and correctly using your measuring tape. If the homeowner has the dimensions already, you can use them to save time. Find out if the job will include exterior and interior walls. Ask the customer to show you any areas that will require special attention.

Step 2: Calculate exactly how many gallons of paint you will need to complete the job when you get back to the office. A gallon of paint should cover about 350 square feet, varying slightly depending on the type of wall. Also, decide what other types of products you will need. You may need extra drop cloths, brushes and other equipment. This must all be worked into your quote. You must also determine if you will need to hire extra help to finish the job.

Step 3: Create a quote form on your computer. You can find a sample forms online, and Microsoft Word has templates that you can download that will be helpful. Print your quote and deliver it to your customer. Be sure that the customer signs the quote before any work is done on the house.
