How to Raise Bloodhound Puppies

Bloodhounds can be great dogs to have. With proper training and the right care they can grow to be loving, gentle adult dogs. They are known for being stubborn and pig-headed, so raising them right will make all the difference in the world.

Bloodhound puppies can be a lot of fun to have around. Raising them can prove to be a challenge however because they tend to be very stubborn dogs. It is important that you start training right away so you can properly train bloodhound puppies that are well behaved and socialized.

  • Start off by letting the puppy know who the alpha dog is. This means making them wait until you give the permission to eat and handle their food. This way, your scent is on the food. Do not allow the puppy to walk ahead of you through doors. When walking your puppy, they should be next to you and never pulling.

  • Crate train your bloodhound puppy. Because of their instincts to follow their nose they are likely to tear up the house and even get themselves into trouble when you are not there to keep an eye on them. This is also a great way to potty train your puppy. Make the crate small enough where it will be difficult for them to get away from the mess should they have an accident.

  • Potty train the puppy; take them outside immediately after they have eaten and when they wake up. Praise the puppy as soon as they go outside. Make sure to use a specific phrase like “outside” or “potty” when taking them out so they will know what it means.

  • Spend a lot of time paying attention to your puppy’s ears. They are prone to infection and you will more than likely have to clean them on a regular basis and sometimes apply medication.
