How to Read a Newspaper Online

Some people claim that online newspapers will replace print media. It is possible that one day print media will be completely phased out by cheaper electronic media. Newspaper readers laud the convenience of online newspapers because headlines are constantly updated providing the most up-to-the-minute news.

  • Find an online newspaper. The largest newspapers in the United States have online versions. This includes papers like the "New York Times," "USA Today" and the "Wall Street Journal." Local newspapers and niche newspapers may also be available electronically.

  • Pay any fees. Some newspapers let readers browse articles for free. Other newspapers charge a monthly or yearly subscription fee or allow the reader to pay per article.

  • Return to the newspaper's home page. After paying any fees, return to the home page, which acts as the front page of the online newspaper. The home page contains the newspaper's most relevant titles, including any breaking news. From the home page, you can browse the newspaper's other categories.

  • Click article titles to view complete articles. Viewing the complete article navigates you away from the homepage. To return to the homepage, press the back button on your browser.

  • Watch for video content. Some article titles on the front page may lead to a video clip. The video clips are news reports similar to those on television. A triangular "play" button near the article title indicates articles with video clips.

  • Browse newspaper categories. Older content and lifestyle content is typically left off the front page. Click through the tabs at the top or side of the page to find information in other categories.
