How to Read a Propane Gas Meter
Most types of propane furnaces, stoves and gas tanks have attached gas meters that tell you how much fuel is left. This helps you determine when to refill the tank with propane gas. If you do know how to read your propane gas meter, you could run out of gas unexpectedly.
- Locate the gas meter on the side or back of your gas tank. It will look like a small metal or plastic box that contains numbers and arrows. If your tank does not have a built-in meter, you can purchase one from your local home improvement store. Follow the instructions in the meter box to install it properly.
- Inspect the meter to determine what type it is. Direct dial meters have a display like one on a digital clock. Clock meters have an arrow that points to a number or percentage point. These numbers symbolize the amount of fuel left inside the tank.
- Fill your tank with gas, and watch the meter as it changes. When the meter reads 100 percent, you will know the gas tank is full. Check the tank often to see what percentage of gas in left inside it. When the percentage gets down to 25 percent, you may want to purchase or order more fuel.
- If you cannot read your gas meter yourself, contact your gas supplier and ask for technician to come and read your meter. Technicians are trained to read all types of meters and can show you how to read it as well.
