How to Rebuild a Carburetor
Whether you are working on a vintage vehicle, a motorcycle or a lawn mower, you can save money by rebuilding the carburetor yourself. Of course, there are lots of variables, depending on what make or type of engine you're working on. Here are some general steps.
What you will need:
Carburetor kit, safety goggles, carburetor cleaner, toothbrush, safety mask
Directions:
- Get a carburetor kit from a local auto parts store. These kits will save you a lot of time because they have the parts you will need.
- Make sure you have an appropriate location to work. Because your work will produce a great deal of fumes, it is essential the area should be well ventilated. Make sure also that you have the proper safety equipment to protect you from the fumes, as well as safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris. The space must be clean and have adequate lighting.
- Inspect the directions that come with your kit, including the diagram. Look over the parts to see that everything that is supposed to be in the kit is there. Looking over the diagram will help you put the parts back together.
- Pull the cover from the accelerator pump. Then remove the choke and the links to the choke. Take note of the way that the links fit when pulling them out so that you will know how they fit back into place. The hoses and screws will all need to be replaced with new ones.
- Clean the parts with a brush and carburetor spray. The best brush to use is a toothbrush because it will not damage the parts.
- Use the diagram in the kit to help you put everything back together properly. Also, remember where everything went when you took the items out, and be sure they go back into place as they were before. Tighten the screws, but do not over-tighten.
