Purchase the right sound equipment. You will need a high-powered microphone, a digital recorder and headphones. A parabolic reflector is also needed to record bird sounds. Parabolic reflectors resemble little satellite dishes and help to reflect sound. The reflected sound will be directed towards your microphone.
Place your microphone in the middle of the parabolic reflector.
Connect your digital recorder to the microphone.
Go to the place you wish to record bird sounds at. This place could be a park, a field or even your own backyard. Be careful to not startle the birds. Be as quiet as possible and do not wear anything that is visually distracting.
Direct the parabolic reflector towards the birds that you wish to record and turn on the digital recorder. The birds may move, so be prepared to adjust the parabolic reflector accordingly.
Use your headphones to listen to the bird sounds while you are recording them. This will give you an accurate idea of exactly what sounds you are recording.
Take notes on the color and look of the birds that you are recording. This will help you to identify them later on, if you do not know what kind of birds you are recording.
