How to Recover After Arthroscopic Knee Surgery

Arthroscopic knee surgery is a type of knee surgery that involves repairing damaged bones and joints in the knee. This kind of leg surgery is fairly common, and the vast majority of patients enjoy a quick recovery when the surgery is absent of complications.

  1. Ask your surgeon about the recovery process. The nurse or surgical assistant will provide you or your caregiver with written instructions on care of the knee during the healing process. Find out about medication dosages and bathing restrictions prior to leaving the facility.

  2. Use the correct medical equipment. Recovery from arthroscopic knee surgery requires patients to keep the leg stable. The doctor will wrap the stitched area in sterile gauze and bandages. A knee brace further stabilizes the leg. Since the knee will not be able to stand much pressure while healing, patients must rely on crutches or a walker for mobility. Wear compression stockings or a compression boot if your surgeon is concerned with the possibility of clotting.

  3. Take medications. Pain for a few days or weeks after the surgery is normal and taking drugs to control the pain will help. Other medications may include blood thinners or stool softeners depending on the patient's pre-surgical condition.

  4. Apply ice. Use ice packs on the knee to help control post-surgical swelling.

  5. Ask for help. Rely on the support of family or friends for the first few days following the knee surgery. If you do not have any immediate family in the area, find out if your insurance company will cover the cost of a professional caregiver during the recovery period.

  6. Watch for signs of infection. If the knee becomes extremely painful, swollen, red or shows signs of pus or fluid accumulation, contact your surgeon immediately.

  7. Keep follow-up appointments. In addition to post-surgical visits with the surgeon, expect to start physical therapy sessions about a week after the surgery.
