How to Repair Patio Swings

How to Recover Patio Swings

Patio swings are often damaged due to their long-term exposure to the weather. The upholstery is often the first part of the swing to be impacted by weathering factors, and is also the simplest part of a patio swing to replace.

  1. Remove the upholstery covering as carefully as possible. It is important to damage the covering as little as possible because the old fabric will serve as a model when you are cutting a new covering for your patio swing. Swing coverings can be attached to the swings through several methods, and should be removed in the appropriate manner.

  2. Remove the cushioning between the patio swing's solid structure and the previously removed fabric. The cushioning is often in as poor of condition as the fabric and it is best to simply replace it while the fabric is removed.

  3. Purchase your new upholstery fabric and cushioning. Your selection in upholstery fabric is largely left to personal preference, and foam serves as an excellent cushioning material.

  4. Lay the old upholstery fabric over your new selection and cut it in the same design. Leave enough extra fabric to sew a hem on the edges and to allow for a slight margin of error.

  5. Cover the patio swing's bare frame with a new layer of cushioning. Use enough of the material to make the swing comfortable, but avoid using so much that it impacts your measurements and cuts from the previous step.

  6. Place the new upholstery fabric over the cushioning material and secure it with staples.
