How to Recycle Cat Food Cans

Owning a cat can create many feelings for a pet owner, including feelings of companionship and a sense of purpose when caring for an animal who depends on its owner for care.  One negative to owning a cat or cats is the excess amount of cat food cans to dispose of. Recycling the cans can be a better option.

  1. Clean the cans thoroughly.  Cat food cans have food residue in them so if the cans are to be kept for any amount of time or reused, they must be cleaned in order to be sanitary and not smell while being stored.

  2. Choose how the cans will be recycled or reused.

  • Cat food cans can be used as starter containers for plants.  If the growing plants are to be kept outside then an ice pick can be used to poke holes in the bottom of the can to allow excess rain water out of it.  If the plants are going to be kept inside or in a greenhouse and watered by hand, the holes are not necessary.

  • Cat food cans are able to be used to scare off birds in a garden.  Take extra cat food cans and paint them silver.  Then poke a hole in the center of each can.  Take two cans and place them bottom to bottom, lacing them onto baling twine.  Repeat.  Put stakes around the perimeter of the garden and run the baling twine with cat food cans around them, tying at each post to secure the twine and cans.  The cans will move and reflect, clattering in the breeze and scare birds and other threats to your garden away.

     3.  Reuse the cat food cans as determined or take them to a scrap metal lot for recycling.
