How to Recycle Your Food Waste Garbage
Recycling food waste is not a new idea; however, for those who live outside rural areas it is just catching on. Gardeners love the cost-saving method of composting, ecofriendly city dwellers appreciate being able to contribute on garbage day. Either way, composting your food waste is wonderful for the environment, and it is easy to do.
If you live in an area where you can recycle your kitchen waste yourself, composting is the best answer. Composting creates garden soil that is rich with nutrients and readily available when you need it.
Items Needed:
- Compost bin, build your own or purchase a pre-made
- Coffee can with lid
- Newspaper or yard waste
Directions
- Purchase or build your compost container, choose a location that is out of the way and an easy distance from your garden to place it.
- Layer yard waste, newspaper and kitchen waste in your compost bin. Continue this process by adding new waste each day from your kitchen. The waste will break down over several months and turn into soil. Many gardeners find that a compost pile started in the late summer and fall is ready by spring.
- Turn the compost as needed. If allowing the pile to sit for the winter you will only need to turn it in the early spring.
Some cities have implemented a kitchen waste recycling program. Each city has different guidelines to follow for what is acceptable. A special bin provided by the disposal company is suitable to place kitchen waste items on the curb each week. This is a wonderful option for those who live in apartments or have nowhere to keep a compost bin.
