How to Recycle a Copier Toner Cartridge

Recycling toner cartridges has many benefits. If they are not recycled, they would just end up in a landfill, and this just adds to the waste that is generated every year. Fortunately, there are several easy and convenient options for recycling toner cartridges.

First, contact the manufacturer to see if they have a return program. A few manufacturers include a shipping label in the box to return the empty cartridge. Simply take the new cartridge out of the box and put the old one inside. It helps to wrap the old one in bubble wrap to make sure it is not damaged in transit. It will also make sure it does not leak. Follow the label instructions for shipping the old cartridge back.

Some of the office supply stores accept empty toner cartridges for recycling and may offer store credit for the cartridge. This is a good option if you shop at the store and will be able to use the credit.

If your community recycles, you can call to see if they will accept the used cartridge. They will want to know what type of plastic the cartridge is made of to see if it is acceptable. The number is found inside the recycle symbol on the cartridge.

Some libraries, animal shelters and community organizations collect toner cartridges for recycling. They receive money for each cartridge that is turned in, then use the money to fund their programs. Also, check with your local school system to see if they collect cartridges for fundraisers.

Finally, there are websites that will pay for empty toner cartridges. You can search the Internet for sites that offer the best price for your type of cartridge. You ship the cartridges to them, and they can either send you the money, or you can ask them to donate the funds to charity. If your cartridges are worn or not worth recycling they can offer other options.
