How to Reduce the Cost of Your Home Insurance

Most people don’t think about their home insurance policy until a catastrophe occurs or they are in the process of buying or selling a home. Home insurance is required by lending companies if you take out a loan to purchase the home. You should take a look at your home insurance policy on an annual basis. There are many ways you can reduce the cost of your policy.

  • Have the property assessed to determine the actual value of the home. Make sure that this is the amount of homeowners insurance you have on your policy. Many companies over insure your home to make sure you have enough coverage; this costs extra money. You only need a policy that covers the actual value of your home.

  • Make sure that your policy covers only the value of your house and any other buildings on the property and not the land. The land cannot be replaced or repaired; there is no reason to insure it. Many companies add the value of the land to the property causing your premium to increase. You do not need to include this amount in your policy.

  • Increase your deductible. This will decrease your premium. Make sure that you can afford the deductible in case of an accident. Most homeowners maintain a $1000 deductible on the home. In a major home insurance claim, $1000 will not be much compared to the overall amount to repair or replace the home.

  • Purchase other lines of insurance with the same company that insures your home. By purchasing auto, life or health insurance, you may be eligible for discounts through the company.

  • Get quotes from other home insurance companies and ask your company to match the premiums offered by other companies. If you company will not match the price, find out why and you may want need to consider changing insurance companies.

  • Improve your home security and sustainability. Many companies offer discounts for anti-theft devices and items that are designed to protect the home like storm windows, locks and security bars.

  • Maintain a good credit scores. Though you may not realize it, your credit score plays a major role in determining how much your homeowner’s insurance policy will cost. Insurance companies are likely to offer better rates to people who pay their bills consistently on time.
