How to Refinish Ceramic Tile
Ceramic tile is an inexpensive option for any room when you want to update or place tiles for the first time. Over time the tiles can become dull from frequent traffic. Cleaning does not always do the trick but refinishing the tile can refresh it.
How to Refinish Ceramic Tile
Materials Needed
- Bucket
- Water
- Mild liquid dish detergent
- Mop
- 220 grit sandpaper
- Orbital sander
- Bonding primer
- Paint stirrer
- Paint tray
- Epoxy paint kit made for ceramic tiles
- Paint roller
- Fill a bucket with 2 gallons of warm water. Pour in ¼ cup of mild liquid dish detergent. Use a mop and the cleaning solution to thoroughly clean the tile. Pour out the dirty water. Rinse the bucket and fill it with clean water. Use the clean water to rinse the tile and allow it to completely dry.
- Place 220 grit sandpaper on the bottom of an orbital sander. Sand over the ceramic tile. This will remove any glue, caulk or paint. Mop over the floor with a damp mop to remove any dust particles. Allow the floor to dry.
- Remove the lid from a can of bonding primer and blend it with a paint stirrer. Pour the primer in a paint tray. Apply a thin layer of primer over the ceramic tile using a paint roller. Allow the primer to dry for one complete day.
- Prepare the epoxy paint kit according to the direction on the package. Apply a coat of epoxy paint over the floor with a paint roller. Allow the coat to dry for 24 hours. Apply a second coat of paint and allow it to dry for 48 hours.
