How to Register a Vehicle

Every vehicle that drives on the street must first be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles. You can obtain your registration quickly and easily with a little planning. Register your vehicle online, in person or through the mail. You must renew your registration yearly.

Register in person by physically going down to your local department of motor vehicles. Take a number and wait to be called or stand in line, depending on the system they have in place. When the attendant calls your number, inform them that you would like to register your vehicle. You will need to provide your State ID or Driver’s License, your bill of sale or old registration and payment for costs and fees due. If tags come with your new registration, affix them over your old tags immediately. Expired tags could net you a large ticket.

You can register your vehicle online by following the correct link on your local department of motor vehicle’s home page. Input the required information into the forms displayed on the web page. Make sure that you print out the confirmation page after you complete your order. Renew online ahead of time to avoid a possible lapse in time resulting in an expired registration.

You can register through the mail by completing the required forms by hand and mailing them in business envelope to your local vehicle registration office. Remember to write a check covering the full cost of your new registration paperwork. Avoid mailing paperwork at the last minute.
