- Always take measurements for changes in the bathroom to make sure items for fixtures will fit. It is a good idea to keep the toilet in the same location to avoid major changes in the plumbing. Other fixtures can be easily changed without changing the plumbing such as a bigger window or adding a skylight.
- Sketch out a plan. This will save you time and money and will also give you a good idea of what you can and cannot fit in the bathroom. It is not easy planning for something, getting happy about it only to find out you cannot install it.
- You should always start by ripping out flooring, ceilings and walls. This is so you can plumb and add wiring if necessary. You should also insulate the walls and ceilings. Make sure you plaster the walls with drywall.
- Fixtures and cabinetry should be done once the plumbing and wiring is done. Now is a good time to also tile a shower, add glass doors or put in a clawfoot tub. You should also consider the type of sinks you want and add them. The toilet should be seated after the floor has been put in.
- Flooring can be laid down; light fixtures can be installed as well as the wall cabinets and shelves. The toilet should be the last thing you install. After it is install you will want to go ahead and wax seal the floor and paint the bathroom.
