How to Remove Aluminum Storm Windows

A lot of people replace their aluminum storm windows to a more energy efficient model. Obviously the old windows need removed first. This process can certainly be done by yourself with a few tools. Removing old storm windows is a great weekend project.

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver

  • Small Container

  • Pry Bar

  • Rags

  • All Purpose Cleaner

  1. 1. Remove any screws or brackets that are helping hold the windows in place. The type of screwdriver you need varies depending upon what types of screws were used to hold your windows in place. You might have to scrape paint off the screws with the screwdriver before you remove them. Make sure you start removing screws at the bottom first just in case the window falls out on its own. Make sure you put the screws and brackets in a small container so you don't lose them.

  2. 2. Remove one side of the window with a pry bar while holding the other side with your hand. You might want to have someone help you with this step if the window is heavy. Also be careful if you need to use a ladder. Make sure the ladder is secured safely. Put your old windows in a safe place until you've replaced them with new windows.

  3. 3. Clean the edges of where the windows were located with rags and all purpose cleaner. There will probably be dirt and debris built up in the corners. Cleaning the edges will help with the installation of the new windows.
