How to Remove Auto Fuel Tank
The removal of an automobiles gas tank doesn’t happen very often. When it does it is most generally to replace the fuel pump, which is not accessible without removing the gas tank. Removing the gas tank is not that hard and you will need a helper to do it safely.
Items you will require:
- Set of jack stands or a car lift.
- Helper
- Stand to place underneath the gas tank
- Chock blocks
- Wrenches to loosen the tank straps
- Place the jack stands or put the car on the automotive lift. If using stands use your chock blocks to make certain it cannot move.
- Remove the negative cable from the battery until you have competed the tank removal and replacement.
- Place the stand you will be using to support the gas tank in the center of the tank and only a few inches underneath it so it cannot fall when the straps are released.
- Use your wrenches and loosen the bolts that are holding the straps in position. Only undo one side of the straps and see if you can get the tank out that way. It will prevent you from having to find all the holes again later if it works.
- Get your helper at one end and you at the other and lower the tank down and out. You will have to remove the tank jack stand prior to doing this so it will come down.
- If you are replacing your fuel pump or the tank itself you are now ready to do so.
