How to Remove Automotive Window Tint
Window tint can help block sunlight and adds a stylish look to vehicles. When it is left on a car window for a long time, it may start to crack or peel. The old tint needs to be removed and a new tint applied when this happens.
Items Needed:
- Trash bags
- Window cleaner
- Steel wool
- Ammonia
- Remove the automotive tint on a hot, sunny day. The heat makes it easier to remove the tint from the windows.
- Park the car in direct sunlight, and allow it to sit for several hours. This heats the tint and makes it more pliable.
- Cover your dashboard and seats with plastic sheets or trash bags to protect them from being damaged by the tint debris.
- Cut the sides of a garbage bag to create one long piece of plastic.
- Spray the window cleaner on the tinted window. Quickly place the cut garbage bag against the window. Cover the entire surface of the glass. The trash bag will pull off the window tint as it is removed.
- Wait 20 to 30 minutes and repeat the process. This allows the sun to heat the tint between window cleaner applications.
- Once the large portions of the tint have been removed, spray the window with ammonia or a cleaner with ammonia in it. Use steel wool to scrub the ammonia into the tint and remove it. You may need to apply the ammonia several times to keep the tint saturated.
- Use a vacuum cleaner or hand broom and dustpan to remove the tint shavings from the interior of the car.
