How to Remove Exterior House Mold

How to Remove Basement Mold

Basements provide a perfect breeding ground for mold to grow. Mold tends to grow in areas that are damp and humid, and since most basements fit this description it's not uncommon to find mold growing. Unfortunately this can be harmful to family and pets in the home, and take away from the property value. Cleaning it isn't terribly difficult.

Removing mold from your basement will be important if you want to keep your home healthy and valuable. Removing it can be time consuming, but the process itself isn't that hard.

What You'll Need:

  • Bucket

  • Scrub brush or sponge

  • Mold inhibiting cleaner

  • Wax pencil

  1. Inspect the basement for mold. Mold can be black, blue or white and look a little fuzzy against the surface it's growing on. Walk around the basement and move any boxes, furniture and carpeting that is up against the wall. If you have several areas to deal with after the inspection mark the areas with a wax pencil so you don't miss anything.

  2. Clean the basement. Remove any clutter, garbage and rugs or furniture that may get in your way. If you have mold near an area where carpeting or boxes have been you want to inspect these for signs of mold as well. If you see mold it's best to throw these items away.

  3. Apply the mold inhibiting cleaner to the affected areas. Some of these can be sprayed directly on the mold while others need to be mixed in a bucket with warm water first. Follow the directions on the package for the best results.

  4. Prevent further problems by checking pipes for damage that may be causing excess moisture. If you live in a humid area consider using a dehumidifier to cut back on the problem.
