How to Remove Model Paint

Building models can be an enjoyable hobby for any age group. After building a model, you can paint it in any color combination that you choose. If you later decide that you want your model to be a different color, you will have to learn how to remove model paint before you can repaint it another color.

Supplies

  • Large plastic container with lid

  • Liquid paint stripper

  • Old toothbrush

  • Cotton swabs

  • Water

  • Clean rag

Instructions

  1. Pour the liquid paint stripper into a plastic container that is large enough for the model to be completely submerged.

  2. Set the model down into the container filled with paint stripper. Add more paint stripper if needed so that the entire model is covered in the liquid.

  3. Place a lid on the container so that animals and children cannot get into it and let the model sit undisturbed in the paint stripper for 48 hours.

  4. Remove the lid from the container and lift the model out from the container. The paint stripper should have taken off most of the paint.

  5. Soak the model a second time for 48 hours in clean paint thinner if most of the paint remains on the model.

  6. Brush off any remaining paint with an old toothbrush dipped in paint thinner.

  7. Clean the paint out of cracks and crevices of the model with a cotton swab dipped in paint thinner.

  8. Rinse the paint thinner off of the model with clean water and blot the model dry with a clean rag.

  9. Dispose of the used paint thinner according to the disposal instructions listed on the can.

  10. Repaint the model after it has thoroughly dried.
